One question about Tagalog ortography
[baguhin]Hi. Sorry I am not writing in Tagalog but I cannot speak the language :(. I have a general question about Tagalog orthography. Does the current Tagalog orthography standard uses á, à, é, è, í, ì, ó, ò, ú or ù? In the en.wikipedia article about the language nothing is stated about it but one can find there spellings like "umpisá" and "tanghalì". Are those ad hoc forms just showing stress but never written like that except in linguistic contexts to show tone/stress changes or are they the standard forms? Browsing in tl.wikt I have not come across any of these letters so I guess those diacritical marks are not standard. - Diacritics are no longer used in Tagalog/Filipino for any word, although they are still present. In fact, many Filipinos (myself included) do not know how to use them. Even if there are differences (example: úpo for the vegetable and upó for "to sit"), Filipinos usually discern them based on context. --Sky Harbor 21:40, 30 Abril 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Sky Harbor! :). Yes, actually I thought something like that happened. A few months ago I read most of a newspaper in English and Tagalog (it was good fun and interesting for me recognizing words clearly coming from Spanish in it! :) and I do not remember having seen any diacritics in it, that is why I came here with the question. - (Late response, so I'm sorry for being very inactive) Because the standard that all Tagalog-language projects use is Filipino, diacritics are currently optional, and are not used. However, since this is a dictionary, we can entertain proposals as to how we should implement the use of diacritics. Any ideas? --Sky Harbor 15:29, 14 Agosto 2009 (UTC)
